Level: Foundations II

Course Details

Students will study and observe the distinctive art movements and artistic traditions that influenced the techniques of the masters. Through careful observation and guided study, students will gain an understanding of how artists used color, composition, value, and technique to communicate their ideas. Students will then apply these principles to create their own original compositions.

This creative exploration course uses soft pastels as its primary medium, providing students with hands-on instruction in fundamental pastel techniques while encouraging thoughtful observation, craftsmanship, and individual artistic expression.

Grades: 3rd-12th- (Level: Foundations II- students who have some experience and knowledge of art mediums are recommended)

Meetings: Once per month- 90 min.

Location: Online format

Class Dates: 9/29, 10/27, 11/17

Tuesdays:

Session A: (ONLINE) 12:00 p.m.- 1:30 p.m.

Class Information

About the Instructor

Julia Akers has a passion for bringing art education into our community. She is a working artist and muralist in the greater Sacramento area and has been teaching for over 16 years to students of all ages and abilities. She studied Classical Painting at the New York Academy of Art and is currently completing her B.S. Ed in Art Education at Valley State University.

One of her favorite things to teach at the Academy is the outdoor painting classes. She also loves reading, chocolate, learning languages, and traveling.

Technical Requirements

Online Art Class — Technology Requirements

Students will need a computer or tablet with a reliable internet connection to participate in live online instruction.

A device with a working camera and microphone is required so students can interact with the instructor and receive feedback during class.

Class cameras must stay on during class. Students may be muted during class sessions unless they need to speak with the teacher.

Students should also have access to the class’s designated online meeting platform, such as Zoom.

For the best experience, students should position their device so the instructor can clearly see them or their artwork and workspace during demonstrations and age- appropriate critiques/ support.

Online Painting Classes

Join us for an online art experience where students of all levels learn classical and contemporary techniques, art history, and artist biographies from influential artists! Our art classes are gentle, supportive, and encouraging. We want students to experience the joy of creating art while developing self-confidence.

Students should have most of their artwork completed during class time. If additional support is needed, please have your student email their instructor for feedback and guidance! Students will receive an Art Movement and Artist worksheet to complete at home if desired.

Students will be taught how to see as artists and develop skills of artistic observation and creative interpretation in each class setting. Courses will be guided with STEP-BY-STEP instructions on how to use classical techniques to practice the unique strategies used by the artist we are learning about in class. Students will utilize their gained knowledge, creative interpretation, and artistic judgment to work on their own artworks.

Teachers work with students individually according to their level and ability, and an online platform is a great way to work with students in the comfort of our own homes/studios!

Students will be taught painting/drawing elements such as:

-Elements of Composition

-Changing light and shadows

-Creating depth

-Perspective

-Color theory

-Brush techniques

-Blending

-and so much more!
